The Issue

Cameron County, Texas, is a vibrant and close-knit Latino community, cherished for its unique cultural heritage and stunning location right on the U.S.-Mexico border. As residents of this precious area, we have already witnessed significant changes with the arrival of SpaceX, which has transformed the landscape around us. Now, our community faces another challenge: the potential establishment of large data centers right in the heart of our neighborhoods.

Data centers, while beneficial in facilitating digital growth, bring with them a range of environmental and societal issues. These massive facilities consume vast amounts of water and electricity, posing a threat to our natural resources. The emissions from the center's cooling and energy systems can contribute to local pollution, potentially affecting our health and our local environment. In addition, they might offer only a limited number of jobs for local residents, while outsourcing other opportunities.

Many in our community – our abuelitas, abuelitos, tias, and tios – are not fully aware of these developments. They may see the infrastructure changes but have no real understanding of what's occurring behind the scenes. The lack of clear, accessible information in Spanish and culturally relevant communication means they are often left out of the conversation regarding their own homes and land. Sometimes just the language barrier in itself our people do not understand what proposals they are trying to bring to this city! Please let’s bring awareness to this issue!

Cameron County is more than just a spot on the map for industry expansion and corporation grabs! It is our home! As a hidden gem marked by rich traditions and diverse history, our Latino rich community deserves to have a say in developments that could alter our way of life and those of our future children! Instead of becoming another person who believes in the network of corporate interests, we should focus on enhancing our communities with sustainable and inclusive growth strategies.

We call upon local and state officials to halt plans for any data center developments in Brownsville and across Cameron County. We demand transparency and inclusive dialogue that includes everyone in our community, particularly those most often left in the shadows. Let's prioritize our environment, our health, and our cultural integrity over technological expansion.

Please join us in preserving the integrity of our Latino neighborhoods and creating a safe space  for the future generations to come. Sign this petition to urge our leaders to stand with us against these intrusive projects and to advocate for our community's needs and desires. Let’s be a voice to our people!
Let’s be a voice to the voiceless!

I want my kids to get a chance to fish in the same waters their daddy has fished in, I want to preserve the wildlife and surrounding ecosystems, keep brownsville home! I don’t want the canales or nearby water areas to be drained, let’s do this for the future generations of the RGV!
KEEP BROWNSVILLE HOME!
