Stop Netflix's Extra User Fee

The Issue

“Love is sharing a password”

— Netflix, March 2017. Twitter.

Recently Netflix has been testing out different ways to stop password sharing amongst users by having account holders pay extra for passwords shared outside of the home. This has taken place in a handful of Latin American countries (didn’t work out well) with plans to roll out globally as announced in their quarterly earnings report.

For many loyal customers, the idea of this is outrageous. In Netflix’s quest to become a major player in the Hollywood system, as well as stepping into the world of mobile gaming, it has put its customers to the wayside. Since 2019 there has been three price increases —  two occurring in the middle of a pandemic without any type of additional benefits to plans. The most recent price hike took place in only January of this year. On top of this, Netflix’s streaming library has continued to shrink all while claiming the price hikes are to bring us “a wide variety of quality entertainment".

With most customers paying nearly $20 a month or more for standard or premium plans where Netflix already limits the number of streams per account, it’s infuriating to be told who can use the plan and where. Netflix is also ignoring the impact of this on people that come from divorced families, kids away at school, or even people simply going on vacation. What was the point of offering profiles in the first place and is this really necessary after recently adding 2.4million new subscribers?

Sign this petition to let Netflix know that this upcoming change is unacceptable and should not be implemented. Say yes to password sharing and no to this cash grab.
