Stop Needless Deaths from Medication Side Effects being mismanaged

The Issue

UPDATED 08/31/24  I had to wait to finish my degree to give this effort the energy it deserves.   In my initial outreach, the first ARNP, Mom's primary, was deemed to have done nothing wrong.  I will be appealing this decision due to my attestation that she did not manage Mom's medication side effects or potential interactions, nor did she advocate for the discontinuation of the Kevzara from the prescribing PA rheumatologist through Mulitcare.

The prescribing PA rheumatologist did not provide adequate informed consent to my mother, myself, or my mother's best friend when we went to the appointments.  Had my mother known the potentially lethal complications, she would have taken the medication.  She said, " I just want to have a nice summer with my children and grandchildren".  Mom was promised that if she took this medication for 6 months, her symptoms of PMR ( which I will share in another post), would be out of the muscular pain and able to have a good summer.   Mom died.

In the research that I am doing, and will publish here, from the Mayo Clinic, there were many reasons that Mom's medications should have been looked at more closely.  Her symptoms showed the need for responsible medication management, which was not done by the people she entrusted with her healthcare.

Please share this petition that our Elders deserve both informed consent as well as symptom rechecks every 3 months, especially when on an experimental medication.  This hasn't just happened to my mother but to many elders.  It's time to stand up and demand better senior care.

Elders are being prescribed multiple medications that each have side effects.  Yet prescribers are not providing proof that the interactions between the medicines prescribed and the side effects are not making patients ill.  The package inserts are printed in print too small to be read and the side effects are not presented clearly with true informed consent.

Though my mother was of sound mind, she attempted to advocate for the impact of the side effects on her health, was ignored, and passed away in a tragic and painful death.  There are thousands of stories like the one of my mother, patients needlessly dying because of the negligence and lack of care the prescribers give when prescribing medications.

I am calling for reform in the management of medication prescribing.  Every two months, the prescriber should meet with the patient and provide a written checklist of the symptoms that the patient is experiencing with a determination to continue the medication agreed or disagreed to by both parties.

The time is now to act so that no more Mom's , Grandma's, Fathers, or Grandfathers are lost to poor quality of medical care.  It is time to provide proof that the clients are being heard.
