The Issue

As someone deeply affected by the sudden and disruptive proposals for data centers in rural Nebraska, I want to share my story and concerns about this ongoing situation. Imagine the tranquility of rural life replaced by towering data centers, sucking the life out of our community through scarce water resources and potential health hazards. Not to mention, our cherished home values plummeting because of these sprawling developments. Why do they target our rural areas, you might wonder? It's simple: zoning laws here are loose, making it effortless for these industries to push their agenda on us without considering the impact on our daily lives.

Nebraska's rural communities are known for their scenic beauty, agriculture, and close-knit neighborhoods. But the proposed data centers threaten to change all of that. First and foremost, the water usage required to cool these massive facilities is substantial. According to industry estimates, data centers can consume hundreds of thousands of gallons of water each day. This is water that could otherwise support our farms, homes, and local wildlife. In a state where agriculture is a cornerstone of our economy and identity, diverting precious water resources to data centers poses an existential threat.

Moreover, there are environmental and health implications associated with these centers. Studies have shown that data centers can emit pollutants and high noise levels, disrupting the peace and purity we've long enjoyed. The introduction of high-voltage equipment and constant operational noise could pose a risk to the health and well-being of residents, particularly the most vulnerable among us.

We must act now to ensure our voices are heard before these plans are pushed through without public consultation. We need to advocate for zoning changes that protect our rural heritage, encourage sustainable growth, and prioritize community input in planning decisions. Our elected officials should focus on zoning reforms that can balance technological advancement with our community's needs and values.

Join us in demanding a halt to the construction of data centers in rural Nebraska. Sign this petition to protect our home values, preserve our water resources, and defend our right to a healthy environment. Together, we can ensure that our rural communities remain safe, vibrant, and beautiful for generations to come.
