Stop Mynydd-Maen Wind Farm

Stop Mynydd-Maen Wind Farm
The Issue
Stop Mynydd-Maen Wind Farm
RES ( Global Renewable Energy Solutions ) want to build at least 13 huge industrial size wind turbines on Mynydd-Maen mountain. With a additional developer ( Pennant Walters ) applying for around 4 more turbines near the Trecelyn side and upto 4 x 180m high turbines on Rhyswg side (between Nant Gwyddon and Cwmcarn forest drive). Plus Cil-lonydd 92 Acre Solar Farm near the Abercarn side, (( by developer Cenin-now approved by PEDW on 12/11/2025 )). This will have a huge impact on the mountain itself and people in the surrounding area. Some issues will include noise pollution, Visual impact, property devaluation, environmental and access issues. Changes to the road layouts, widening, roundabouts removed. no parking zones for some people who normally park outside their homes. This is to access the site area for the estimated 27,000 lorries (more when Rhyswg confirmed) & industrial machinery, passing Risca and all the villages on route to old Pant Road ( Pantside ). These turbines will require specialised forms of transport & police escort for Items such as the turbine blades etc. (eg. Wikinger offshore wind farm has blades 67.5m long)
The Mynydd-Maen wind Farms & Solar farm site plans combined below with potential Haulage route:-
Areas it will directly effect include:- Risca, Abercarn, Newbridge, Pantside, Hafodyrynys, Pantygasseg, Upper Race, Pontypool, Griffithstown & Cwmbran.
Individual Site Plans Towards bottom of Petition ( Scroll Down! )
Wildlife
Mynydd-Maen is home to many species of birds including ground-nesting Skylarks and Red kites. Not to mention the animals and plants ( Including acres of Heather for Bees). With natural spring-fed ponds which are also home to many species ( including Newts ).
Peat & Heather Vs Concrete Foundations
For years now we have been force-fed by our media "Peat-Free compost is the way to go",.."we need to re-wild, disruption to land containing peat releases large volumes of co2!". Well there will be far more than disruption to the Thousands of tonnes of Peat on Mynydd-Maen as you cannot "Tip-toe" around the mountain with JCB,s and Cranes. All 3 developer site areas combined will span approximately 500 Hectares ( 1236 Acres ) ( or 1235 90m x 45m Football pitches ). On this area there are plans for Control station, network operator substation compound, Car park, Concrete Crane hardstandings, Transformers, Battery storage, Cable trenches & drainage works, The plans include quarry pits to extract ( Via Blasting ) 65000 cubic metres of stone for foundations and 10km of roads. Those foundations for the Wind Turbines will be huge! ( Around 25m x 5m reinforced concrete.) All on a High risk mining area!
Below Mynydd Maen Heather ( 4 of the Turbines are in the plans for this area ) Heather is valued and preserved in areas such as Conwy (North Wales) for Bees nectar and celebrated with a annual Honey Festival
Below Some of the thousands of tonnes of Mynydd Maen Peat at a planned turbine site. (Recently Peat has been Preserved in the Scottish Flow Country)
Fresh Water Springs
The mountain upland is covered by huge areas of peat. This acts as a natural filter to rain water which in tern runs into fresh water springs. The concrete foundations for these Wind turbines will require around 13,000 tonnes of concrete and cause major disruption to the soil ecology. This will leach into and harm the surrounding water table and in turn the fresh water springs, which some surrounding properties are reliant on as their source of clean water.
Visual Impact & Noise
These Huge turbines will be around 150m high. ( 'The Tower' Flats in Cwmbran for example is around 64m high ). People living near existing wind turbines say they are loud. Wales has always been known for green grass and rolling hillsides. Now unfortunately our Welsh Government, has certain individuals with their own agenda, and they are giving into these developments before exhausting location alternatives. Wales already produces over twice the amount of electric it needs. Now the hillside views are now blighted with Huge White wind turbines. Totally out of harmony with Nature!.
Offshore Waters Given Away
Thanks to a weak British Government the majority of Offshore wind Farms are foreign owned. Danish companies such as 'Orsted' have been allowed to build billions of pounds worth of Wind farms in our waters. This is wrong, as we should own them ourselves. In tern would of reduced the need for onshore!.
So now instead our Government is destroying our Countryside with Onshore wind farms ,"Yes the very countryside that "Net - zero" is supposed to save?" Well we are on the subject of "Net- Zero", everyone should have a second look at what these so called scientific studies are based on. Studies can be falsified as we are now seeing after the events of the last few years.
The only people benefiting are the rich such as David Cameron's Father-in- law...Google search and you will see...
''David Cameron's father-in-law has exploited Labour's lucrative green subsidy to build a wind farm generating an estimated £3.5million a year on his country estate. Around half the income comes from the government's generous scheme for generating renewable energy which is subsidised by every household via their electricity bills.''
Cheaper energy bills?
Most people are under the illusion we will get cheaper energy bills. But both wind and solar only produce intermittent energy. The renewable energy sector is a trillion dollar industry. Its more about making money for stake holders than electric. The wind farm companies can't loose as the bill payers will be paying for their loses ( Called Curtailment money ) for any days when there is no wind or winds are too high to run the turbines and electric is not being produced so gas fired power stations are used which are cheaper to run.
Location Alternatives
Alternative energy sources need to be explored. But incorrect locations for projects of this size need to be stopped. Already heavily industrialized areas such as the River Severn is home to 2 bridges a power station at Oldbury and a huge Docklands at Avonmouth. The question has to be asked..."Why not explore tidal flow options or Floating Turbine Technology?" If 2 Bridges have been built there then RES should have no problem situating some wind turbines next to them. OR Find areas with minimum disruption to surrounding environment and well away from peoples homes! At the very least areas such as large car parks could be used for Solar Canopies and would be far easier to access than our mountain and would be a more obvious and far less destructive choice to make. Just not close to homes!
Lack of representation
Changes made to planning regulations by the Welsh government in recent years means that certain ministers have 'pre-selected' areas of Wales for onshore wind farm projects. The majority of the public are unaware of these areas until it's too late and questions like " How has the mountain even been considered in the first place?" are being ignored. As with all projects of this size, the idea is you write to your local MP's, MS and Councillors with your objections. What they should do then is represent you against the Developers and question the poor location with your objections and stop the project going ahead. Instead there has been a lot of 'buck passing',minimal response or no response at all? If enough members of public get involved here they will have to listen. You can use this petition to add weight to your concerns. Try to find the Mp's , Senedd members and Councillors that will help & respond!.
Preservation & Relaxation
Mynyndd-Mean provides a place to enjoy and relax both for local residents and walking, bird watching & cycling enthusiasts from afar. I live in Cwmbran myself and can say It is so nice to live in an area that has nature right on the door step. All the locals say "This is our Mountain!"
Summary
You will not see a reduction in your energy bills after this project, just the destruction of our mountain. It has existed like this for thousands of years. So don't let individuals in this generation of Government destroy it for the generations of people to come.
Throughout history is has always been the real people that have made the difference! Volume speaks for itself. If enough people get together authorities will have to listen.
Please spread the word to as many of your friends and family as you can. They may not know about RES, as local residents are being bypassed in wind farm location choices. I only found out about this from a leaflet through the door by a group opposing this project. This will effect everyone in the area and anyone else who enjoys the mountain... Time to make a stand against the needless sacrifice of our countryside!
Thanks for your support!
The main points are above.
For Additional Information Including Links to Developer Websites and contact Information for Planning Details etc - see below:-
Just to confirm THIS PETITION IS TO SAY NO to any wind Farms, developments / turbines or Solar panels on the mountain. Some developers tactics maybe to push huge wind turbines at first and when they get objection suggest smaller "Baby" wind turbines or solar panels to try and persuade the public. The petition is aimed at saving (all of) the mountain area and preserving its nature and natural beauty.
Although I have created this petition, its for all of you to represent your voices. There are some Facebook groups relating to the Mynydd-Maen project which is great, the more the merrier!. But just remember some of these groups are "closed groups". This means that some information, like this petition, may not be posted without an administrators approval. So don't just rely on them.
You don't need to be in any group to share this petition link:- (anyone over 16 years old can sign)
Or Scroll down to bottom of page for a QR code link
Its yours to add to any website, link to friends and family and share on any Social group if you want too. ( no restrictions! ) As its about getting the word out there! Remember there are still lots of people that are not aware of this project (which is unfair!)
See if you can find at least 10 people to sign and try and get them to do the same. Even if you all live in the same household. It only takes a couple of minutes. There will only be 5 weeks to object to PEDW on each individual development, so it's worth an email to ask them to put you on their email list so you are alerted to the exact date when the 5 week periods start. Its also worth emailing & writing to your councillors, MP's & Members of Senedd to try and get them to back up your concerns. I urge you to do your own searches related to these projects for your objection time scales!
