Stop MPs from Claiming Tax Payers' Money for Personal Expenses
The Issue
I have watched, appalled and concerned, as our country struggles while our MPs continue to claim taxpayers' money for personal expenses such as second homes, and utilities — making the taxpayers poorer and themselves richer. This continued abuse of public funds is disrespectful to those who work hard and contribute to these funds, only to see them diverted towards expense accounts of individuals earning salaries around £100,000. It is beyond time we hold our elected officials accountable for such egregious misuse of public funds.
In 2018-19, MPs claimed more than £116m in expenses, an increase of two-thirds since the scandal 10 years ago confirming such wasteful spending (source: Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority). Yet, we have public service systems that are strained, homelessness levels that are soaring, food bank usage that is at its highest, and those same taxpayers struggling to make ends meet. MP's expenses should be reined in and reallocated towards improving public services, helping the homeless, and providing more substantial support for taxpayers who are shouldering the burden of current economic challenges.
Public funds should be used for the public good, not to deepen the pockets of our politicians. By putting ROBIN into law (Reformation of Benefit Inclusion and Norms), we can ensure that the money designated for public services is not squandered. Stand with us in telling our government we expect better guardianship of our resources. Please, sign this petition and demand these changes.
