Stop Montreal's $300,000 Deer Slaughter: Promote Non-Lethal Solutions

"Montreal will spend nearly $300,000 this fall to kill 145 Virginia deer in Pointe-aux-Prairies and Bois-d’Anjou Nature Parks, a 30% higher than expected." »

"The City had specified that 140 animals would be slaughtered by professional shooters, based on recommendations from an expert panel consisting of veterinarians and biologists."

The tender, launched last June, generated mixed interest, with only one company submitted a bid. The proposal of 9103-7143 Québec Inc., a company specialized in wildlife management owned by François Pelletier, was however 31.3% above the estimated price by the City. "This type of intervention is new in Quebec, and the City of Montreal based its estimate on information transmitted by SEPAQ that carried out a similar operation in 2023," a document released by the City on Wednesday indicates a "lack of experience and knowledge in this new area of expertise". »

"The executive committee will have to finalize on Wednesday the awarding of the contract at a total cost of nearly $296,000 for the slaughter of 145 deer by professional shooters, 125 in the Pointe-aux-Prairies nature park and twenty in the Bois-d’Anjou, which corresponds to a little more" $2000 per animal killed. »

We would like the City of Montreal to stop the slaughter and instead learn to live with deer without killing them.  The concept that killing is a scientific approach created by experts is the same excuse pest control companies use to kill.  Anyone can handpick biased “experts”, especially when the hunter lobby is involved.  The real reason may be that both parks are next door to golf courses, and golf courses, which are sprayed full of toxic chemicals , are not likely concerned about the environment.  Any attempt to feed the deer meat to poor people will potentially expose people to herbicides through bioaccumulation.

Spay programs, whether (safe and natural) chemical or surgical, are the modern scientific expert approach.  A spay program has worked beautifully in Clifton Ohio.  https://cliftondeer.org/

Safe and natural chemical spay works too.  https://spayvac.com/r%26d

The Humane Society of the United States has a great article about deer.  https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/what-do-about-deer
