Stop Missouri’s Unfair SNAP Food Restrictions
Stop Missouri’s Unfair SNAP Food Restrictions
The Issue
Missouri is planning to ban SNAP users from buying candy, sugary drinks, and certain prepared foods starting February 15, 2027. This policy is being sold as a “health initiative,” but the actual numbers prove it is not based on health at all.According to the CDC, Missouri’s adult obesity rate is 36%.According to USDA data:Adults in SNAP households have an obesity rate of 31%Adults not on SNAP have an obesity rate of 34%This means people who are not on food stamps have higher obesity rates than people who are.Missouri’s policy is not a health initiative — it is a discriminatory restriction targeting low‑income families, seniors, disabled adults, and working parents who rely on SNAP to survive. Most SNAP recipients are: Children and Elderly Missourians Disabled adultsWorking families earning low wagesThey are not the stereotype being used to justify these restrictions.Missouri should focus on the real causes of poor health, including:People who don’t even have a real grocery store near them.
Many Missourians live in areas called “food deserts,” which simply means they don’t have a supermarket anywhere close by. Their only options are gas stations, dollar stores, or convenience stores.
That means even if they want to buy healthy food, they can’t, because fresh fruits, vegetables, and affordable healthy options aren’t available where they live.
Missouri’s SNAP restrictions punish people for not buying healthy food, while ignoring the fact that thousands of families literally have no place to buy healthy food in the first place.Rising grocery pricesLow wagesHigh medical costs Limited transportation Lack of access to affordable fresh foodPunishing poor families does nothing to improve public health. We demand that Missouri: Cancel the Healthy SNAP restrictionsStop discriminating against low‑income familiesFollow federal SNAP law and protect food accessWork with communities, not against them Food freedom is a right — not a privilege.
