Stop Missouri Prime Beef from dumping waste into the Pomme De Terre River

Stop Missouri Prime Beef from dumping waste into the Pomme De Terre River
The Issue
THIS IS MISSOURI PRIME BEEF’S PROPOSED PLAN
And please, read this for yourselves if you’re not wanting to believe it.
For those of you that don’t want to read it all the way through, it’s full of a lot of “what ifs”. They are saying that because it is expensive to treat the wastewater or transport it to be treated properly, they should be allowed to dump it into the creek(which leads to pomme de terre river and lake) just because it would cut into their bottom line. They had listed three different alternatives to simply “treating and discharging” it, and chose the cheapest, least effective way possible, admitting that there is a fair chance of failure. The proposed treatment plan for the wastewater doesn’t make it clean. It takes the meat chunks out of it by dissolving it with enzymes. They say in this permit that if their lagoons fail, the groundwater can be poisoned. That means peoples drinking water can be compromised. They’re saying that it is possible that this plan could be catastrophic to our community, but they intend to go forward with it because they “support our community.” They claim to be the largest employer in our area and thus support the families in the area. They claim to alleviate poverty in our town. However, they leave out the fact that most of their workers are NOT from Pleasant Hope. They claim that their employees support local businesses in such a fashion that the businesses would be so negatively impacted by the lack of these people and effectively lose thousands. They leave out the fact that crime has skyrocketed. Semis run the roads all hours of the night waking the people of the community up with Jake brakes. They leave out the fact that the air quality is terrible. That their trucks dump hazardous waste off side roads almost every day. They leave out that they’ve killed the fish and crawdads in the creek (tributary) that is adjacent to them. They leave out all of the red, foul smelling water that runs all hours of the night when they turn their sprinklers on, thinking nobody notices. They leave out the impact that it will have on the Pomme de Terre Lake, how it won’t be safe for people to get in the water. They leave out that the very dirt reeks of rot on the properties that adjoin them. They flood the area with hazardous waste, and claim that it is free fertilizer for farmers. But they somehow neglect to mention how they’re killing the ecosystem and have negatively impacted the environment and our community as a whole. Remember those toxic algae blooms at the lake last summer? The ones that shut the place down? It’s no coindcidence that the blooms started when the dumping issue worsened. However, due to lack of proof, I cannot call these direct accusations, but merely suspicions. This is what we are facing as a community. Worse smell. Less recreation. Dying ecosystems. Property values plummeting. Crime and poverty increasing. It’s now or never ladies and gentlemen. We need to be writing in opposition to this. We need to make some noise or our area is going to be destroyed for generations to come.
