PHILEX's and ASPAC mining activities have had adverse impact on the livelihoods of the rural folk. Farmers in Nabulao village in Sipalay city and Talacagay village in Hino-baan in Negros Occidental noted the decrease in their agricultural production. Most of their farmlands were washed away.

 Wastes from Philex’s operations go directly to the three main rivers – Bacuyangan, Hinoba-an and Sipalay Rivers.

Fishefolks in Old Sagay city complained of significant reduction in fish catch, Before, fishermen could just throw in their fishing nets and catch fish but when the mining operations began, they were no longer allowed to fish in the area.  

Mangroves were cut down to clear the area for magnetite mining.  1,000 families living along coastal area also fear of losing their homes due to flooding brought about by the high tide.

Cases of skin rashes and boils were reported, especially among children who bathe in the creek or river.
