The Issue

Facebook Pages have long been an important way for businesses, creators, publishers, nonprofits, community organizations, and independent websites to share information with their audiences.

Meta is now limiting some Facebook Pages and professional accounts to only two posts containing external links per month unless they subscribe to Meta One.

We believe this restriction should be reconsidered.

External links are a fundamental part of how the open internet works. They allow people to move from social platforms to news articles, business websites, online stores, blogs, event pages, educational resources, videos, and countless other independent sources of information.

For many small businesses and creators, Facebook is not the final destination — it is a communication channel used to connect their audience with content hosted elsewhere.

Charging a subscription simply to continue regularly posting links creates an unnecessary barrier, particularly for small businesses, independent creators, nonprofits, local organizations, and publishers that may not be able to justify another monthly subscription.

This change could also have consequences beyond businesses.

If external links become significantly harder or more expensive to publish, Facebook may become increasingly closed off from the wider web. Users could see fewer links to independent websites and more content designed specifically to keep them inside Meta's ecosystem.

We understand that Meta has the right to offer paid subscriptions and premium tools. Businesses may choose to pay for advanced analytics, enhanced support, verification, AI tools, or other additional features.

However, the basic ability to share links should not become a premium feature.

We are asking Meta to:

  1. Remove the two-external-link-posts-per-month restriction for Facebook Pages and professional accounts.
  2. Keep normal external link sharing available without requiring a Meta One subscription.
  3. Ensure that paid subscriptions provide genuinely additional features rather than placing previously fundamental publishing capabilities behind a paywall.

Facebook became one of the world's largest communication platforms partly because people and organizations could use it to share and discover content from across the internet.

External links are a fundamental part of that.

Keep Facebook connected to the open web. Remove the external link posting limit.
