Thank you so much for signing our petition and showing your support for community mental health in Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Integrated Joint Board (EIJB), the body which makes health and social care budget decisions for the city, met on August 26 and voted through revised proposals that meant fewer and less severe cuts were made to our city’s community mental health services.
You can read the recommendations, which were approved, here: Agenda for Edinburgh Integration Joint Board on Tuesday, 26th August, 2025, 10.00 am - Modern Council
These cuts will have an impact on the level of support available to support and advocate for people living with mental health problems and mental illness in Edinburgh.
However, thanks to your support, the reduction in severity of these cuts will mean many of the services which previously faced closure will be able to continue to operate and help people, in the near future at least
It is also important to note that the existing cuts have forced some services to close, and the EIJB now plans to hold a recommissioning exercise – essentially, a process of reconsidering what kinds of services are needed, and then putting them out for providers, like us, to bid to deliver them – which could lead to further closures or reductions in provision, depending on their outcomes.
We are in a mental health crisis, and community and preventative mental health support is an essential part of how we tackle it. Cutting back on community mental health will not solve these problems and this process has shown that we need to come together - funders, providers and especially the people who need this support - to jointly design a mental health system that works for and meets the needs of the people of Edinburgh.
Thank you again for your support, which we greatly appreciate – and may need again in the future.
