Dear Miami Residents,

The City of Miami’s Commissioners will vote on a proposal to allow more advertising signs in government-owned properties in Miami, including in city parks. You may read more about the proposal in this Miami Today Op-Ed. The proposal will allow mega-signs of up to 1,800 square foot and up to 10 floors high (100 feet), either externally or internally illuminated (LED signs).

These areas include, but not limited to,
Bayfront Park, Maurice Ferré Park,  Virginia Key Beach Park, Adrienne Center for Arts, Pérez Art Museum, Miami’s Children Hospital, Olympia Theater, Guzman Center  and many more!

A widely quoted 2011 study by Jonathan Snyder and Fels Fund found that:
“Residential real estate within 500 feet of a billboard is $30,826 less valuable (p=.035) at the time of purchase”

“Income for strict sign control cities is higher than that for not-strict cities. Furthermore, the home vacancy and poverty rates for strict control cities are lower. Having strict sign controls does not negatively impact the economic prosperity of a city.”

This study was quoted in a large number of articles discussing the impact of advertising signs on communities and property values, including The American Genius: The Economic Impact of Billboards on Neighborhoods and Home Values and Realtor.com: Nearby Billboards Hurt Property Values. Business Insider, in its article 13 Things That Will Trash Your Home’s Value places “Billboards” right in between “Registered Sex Offenders” and “Bad Schools”.
