The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office operates 56 Flock Safety license plate reader cameras. That is the highest count for any county sheriff's office in South Carolina, more than ten times Richland County's five cameras and nearly double Charleston County's 25+. No council vote authorized the deployment. No public hearing was held. No transparency portal exists.

The 56 cameras are just the start. Goose Creek PD, Moncks Corner PD, Hanahan PD, Jamestown PD, and St. Stephen PD all participate in the SLED ALPR database. Berkeley County has near-total coverage on its major roads, with all data flowing to SLED's 422-million-read statewide database and Flock's national network.

Flock secretly gave federal agencies direct access to these camera networks without telling local departments. Their CEO denied it on camera in July 2025 and admitted it three weeks later. In neighboring North Charleston, a police lieutenant was caught using surveillance cameras to stalk his wife. Between Berkeley County's 56 cameras and North Charleston's 800+, the tri-county region has one of the densest surveillance networks in the state with no governing legislation.

Oconee County Council in the upstate of SC just passed an ordinance called "Protection from Mass Surveillance". May Berkeley County also take a stand against the unconstitutional dangers of the increasing surveillance state that is unbecoming of this free people.
