Stop Martin County from Charging Property Owners for Infrastructure Sewer Conversion Fees

Stop Martin County from Charging Property Owners for Infrastructure Sewer Conversion Fees
The Issue
As a resident of Martin County, Florida, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision by the county to charge property owners for the infrastructure fees of conversion of septic to sewer through their Connect to Protect Program. This decision will have a devastating impact on many residents who are already struggling to make ends meet.
According to my research, Martin County Utilities and Solid Waste infrastructure fees can range from $5,000-$15,000 per property owner plus an additional $1,000-$3,000 for connection fees. This is an enormous burden for those who are already struggling financially which doesn't help knowing Martin County applies a lien on each property plus interest for 20 years.
Prior to this mandatory plan of Connect to Protect Program, homeowners were never charged infrastructure fees. Go back to county records and see the proof, so why now? Look at other counties, example: Port Saint Lucie charges a flat fee of $6,026 or 120 monthly payment of $50.22 interest free for 10 years. Hernando County charges 10% of total cost of $36,000 per property which comes to $3,600 again interest free for 10 years.
Reality is, Water & Sewer is a revenue business therefore, customers shouldn't be paying for materials to build your business and then we have to pay the mandatory monthly service provided by the same business - UNETHICAL. The conversion from septic to sewer connect to protect program will improve water quality and protect our environment - something that benefits everyone in Martin County so everyone wants it but not at Martin County exorbitant fee.
