Stop mandatory school purchases

The Issue

In recent years, it has become a troubling trend for private schools to compel parents to purchase books and uniforms directly from the school. This policy puts an unnecessary financial burden on families while limiting their ability to make more affordable choices. This is not a personal grievance—it's a public concern that calls for immediate attention from educational policymakers and government authorities.

Every parent wants the best education for their child, and with the cost of education rising steadily, the expenses for books and uniforms should not add to this burden. There are numerous local and national publications that offer reasonably priced textbooks, making it possible for parents to shop around for better deals. By simply providing a list of required books, schools can allow parents the freedom to purchase from a vendor of their choice, enabling significant cost savings.

Uniforms and shoes are another area where costs could be reduced. Local shops are more than capable of providing quality school uniforms at competitive prices. By allowing parents to choose where to purchase these items, they not only save money but also support local businesses.

School policies that limit purchasing to one outlet are not only inconvenient but questionable in their intent. Such mandates do not seem to prioritize the educational environment; rather, they appear to focus on profit margins.

We respectfully urge the education minister and relevant authorities to evaluate these compulsory purchasing requirements. The absence of regulations in this area allows private schools to impose undue financial burdens on families. Guidelines and limitations should be introduced to ensure that parents have the autonomy to make cost-effective choices for their children's education.

Join us in demanding action from the education authorities. Sign our petition to bring about much-needed change in the school purchasing policies for books and uniforms.
