The Issue

I am reaching out to gather support for a change that impacts many dedicated healthcare professionals in Ohio, like myself. As a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA), I have poured immense effort and care into my profession, working tirelessly as an independent provider. However, one challenge we face is the unnecessary burden of mandatory retesting, which I experienced firsthand when a doctor's refusal to sign off on my areas put my certification at risk.

This issue extends beyond personal inconvenience; it affects every STNA in Ohio, dedicated workers who have already demonstrated their qualifications and are committed to delivering quality care to their clients. Instead of the repetitive and costly process of retesting, I advocate for an alternative that ensures care quality without punitive measures on committed care providers.

State legislation should require STNAs to participate in a mandatory annual continuing education class rather than forcing them to frequently recertify. This education can cover the latest best practices, allowing us to stay up-to-date with medical advancements while alleviating the disruptive necessity of retesting that often arises due to administrative hurdles.

Several states have successfully implemented similar models with positive outcomes. Not only does this approach maintain high standards of care, but it also respects the dedication and expertise of healthcare workers who deserve recognition and support, not hurdles.

I urge you to consider the broader implications of mandatory retesting. By revamping the system, Ohio can ensure ongoing professional development for STNAs while demonstrating respect for their commitment and contributions. Let’s work towards a more efficient system that supports both healthcare workers and the individuals they so passionately serve.

Please sign this petition to call on Ohio’s legislators to update the certification process for STNAs to reflect continuous learning rather than repeated testing. Together, we can help create a fairer, more effective healthcare system that benefits all.
