The issue

Is bread causing behavioural problems and ADHD like symptoms in your children??

In Australia, mandatory fortification of bread flour with folic acid was introduced in September 2009 to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects. Although the intention was scientifically grounded, the policy was passed despite numerous ethical and risk concerns regarding adverse effects of mass administration of a novel substance to the entire population.

Common Signs & Symptoms associated with impaired Folic Acid metabolism

• Tiredness, low energy or fatigue

• Brain fog, difficulty concentrating, memory problems

• Low mood, anxiety, irritability

• Trouble sleeping

• Migraines or frequent headaches

• Hyperactivity or trouble focusing (ADHD-like symptoms)

• Sensitivity to certain foods or chemicals

• Feeling worse after eating foods high in folic acid (fortified breads, cereals)

• History of miscarriage or fertility struggles

• Poor recovery from illness or stress

• Cold hands and feet (circulation issues)

Since implementation there has been no studies or investigations into the broader effect of this mass exposure. Success of the program has been measured only as a % of NTD birth rate reduction. For 2024 this stands at a reduction of incidence in 49 of the 292,400 births. There has been no further investigation into the effectiveness or safety of folic acid beyond this one outcome.

Regardless of red flags, studies and submissions regarding, cognitive, cardiovascular, cancer and other risks, not to mention unknown risks, ethics and medical principles of "first do no harm" folic acid became a stealth staple in the daily diet of bread eating Australians.

More recently studies regarding MTHFR genetic variations and other folate metabolism deficiencies have been gaining ground. For those with this genetic variation, the inability to properly metabolize synthetic folic acid can result in accumulation identified in a number of diseases.

The current policy on NTD prevention does not match the response or risk to the Australian population. There has been no accountability and no measure of the impact on Australian health.

By advocating to stop the mandatory fortification of bread flour with folic acid, we can support the freedom of choice regarding dietary intake, allowing consumers to opt for foods most suitable to their genetic makeup. Instead, encouraging voluntary fortification could be a balanced solution, facilitating availability and targeted programs for NTD prevention, while not imposing potential harm on others.

Since 2009 we have seen exponential growth in the incidence of ADHD and ASD in our children. The correlation in the data between public administration of folic acid and the data may or may not be related. However, the correlation of symptoms and anecdotal evidence more investigation is required to address the rise of ADHD stimulant medication. It is growing at an alarming rate, with no real evidence of the long term risks of these medications on our children. Until folic acid is removed we have no way to see the true impact of the this on Australian Children

Sign this petition to hold the Australian Government mass fortification policy to account. The Australian government must reconsider the mandatory fortification policy, measures, risks and health impacts on the public.

Together, let’s champion flexibility and informed consent in nutrition policy for a healthier future for all Australians.
