Stop mandatory age verification on digital platforms

Stop mandatory age verification on digital platforms

The Issue

I am deeply troubled by the growing trend of mandatory age verification on digital platforms. My personal experience has become increasingly frustrating and invasive. In platforms like Roblox, where I merely wish to chat and engage with others, I've been met with restrictive barriers. Why? Because I refuse to hand over my personal information.

The demands for identification or even facial recognition in digital spaces are pushing privacy boundaries. It makes me and countless others uneasy about our safety. Providing personal information should not be the price of participation in online communities. It's not just about one platform; age verification strategies are expanding across the digital landscape, threatening user privacy everywhere.

Consider the consequences: The systems are not foolproof. What happens if the technology gets it wrong? You're stuck, isolated by a system intended to protect, not alienate. And why should facial recognition scans be necessary? Many share my concern that privacy might be further compromised.

Statistics from privacy advocacy groups show that data breaches affected 2.8 billion consumers last year alone. The more information we wilfully hand over in the name of security, the greater the risks of such breaches.

Solutions do exist. Platforms can consider alternative verification processes that do not rely on sensitive personal data – like community reporting and moderation systems, parental controls, or simple age declarations supported by user interactions in the community. We need to implement privacy-conscious systems that respect users' rights and beliefs while still effectively safeguarding young people online.

Join me in urging digital platforms and regulators to re-evaluate mandatory age verification processes. Together, we can advocate for safer, privacy-respecting environments where users can interact without fear of data misuse or loss of autonomy. Sign this petition to protect our digital rights and preserve our privacy in the online world.
