The Issue

As a parent of a young boy attending school in Minnesota, I find myself deeply concerned about the recent educational mandate requiring 3rd graders to learn non-binary gender pronouns and explore gender identity and expression. For me, this feels like indoctrination, a shift towards embedding a specific gender ideology and political movement into our young children's education.

Minnesota has always prided itself on the quality and inclusivity of its education system. However, mandating such complex topics at an early age without considering parental choice and readiness is inappropriate. Young children are at a critical developmental stage where core foundational skills in reading, mathematics, and critical thinking should be prioritized, rather than introducing concepts of gender identity and expression that many believe should be discussed at a later, more mature age.

Parents should have a say in when and how their children are introduced to topics related to gender identity. Education should empower parents to choose the right timing and context to explain these sensitive topics to their children rather than being forced upon them by the school curriculum. The freedom of choosing how we wish to address these issues within our family structure is essential.

Evidence suggests that premature discussion of such topics without parental involvement can lead to confusion and anxiety among children. Additionally, a University of Minnesota survey found that a majority of parents feel that such topics should be addressed primarily at home, aligning with family beliefs and values.

This petition seeks to urge the Minnesota Department of Education to reconsider the mandate. Instead of imposing these lessons on all 3rd graders, allow schools to offer them as optional modules or ensure parents can opt-out their children from these classes. This approach respects parental rights and acknowledges that not all families share the same views on gender identity issues.

I urge you to support this petition to stop the enforced teaching of non-binary gender pronouns and gender identity to 3rd graders in Minnesota. Parent voices should be heard in educational decisions impacting our children. Sign this petition to preserve the integrity of our education system, respect diverse beliefs, and safeguard children's learning environments.
