The Issue

As a longtime pet owner and caretaker of stray animals, I am deeply troubled by the proposal to make it legal for anyone to pick up stray animals from the streets for use in lab experimentation. These stray animals are not just nameless beings; they are our beloved fur babies that many of us have cared for over the years. They deserve protection, not exploitation.

Every day, countless stray animals roam our streets. While they may not have permanent homes, many compassionate individuals offer them care, love, and sustenance, treating them as part of our extended families. To consider them as mere objects for scientific experimentation is a betrayal of the bond we share with these voiceless creatures.

There is a growing body of evidence that using animals in laboratories often fails to produce results applicable to humans. For instance, a study by the National Institutes of Health in the US revealed that 95% of drugs tested safe and effective in animals fail in human trials. Such statistics highlight the inefficacy and inherent cruelty of these experiments. Moreover, there are already various sophisticated alternatives available, such as in vitro testing, computer modeling, and human-patient simulators, that can replace the need for using living animals in laboratories.

Implementing a law that permits the indiscriminate use of strays for experimentation is a step backwards in our pursuit for humane and ethical scientific practices. Many other countries are leading the way in banning animal testing and investing in alternative methods. We should strive to be leaders in ethical science, not laggards who perpetuate outdated practices.

We must urge legislators to protect these vulnerable animals by rejecting any potential law that legalizes their usage for laboratory experimentation. By promoting humane alternatives, we can save innumerable animals from suffering and encourage a more ethical approach to science. Let's not allow our compassionate society to be tainted by such cruelty.

Join me in standing up for these helpless animals who bring joy, love, and companionship to many lives. Let’s unite to protect them from becoming unwitting victims of unnecessary cruelty. Sign this petition and call for humane and innovative scientific practices that do not compromise the welfare of stray animals.
