Petition updateStop Luck Stone Quarry Project in Hanover, VASAVE OUR HOMES AND HEALTH: STAND AGAINST THE LUCK STONE QUARRY AND ASPHALT PLANT

Thank you to everyone who continues to stand with us against the proposed Luck Stone quarry and asphalt plant on Verdon Road.

After a lifetime in Hanover County and 50 years in my current home, it is incredibly disheartening that I cannot even sit on my own front porch right now. I find myself constantly worrying about my water. This is our current reality with the local drought and the hazardous haze blowing in from the north—but it is also a stark, terrifying preview of what living next to this industrial complex will actually look like. This will be our constant reality with the quarry.

When a deep-pit quarry operates, they have to continually pump groundwater out of the earth just to keep the pit dry. In a drought like the one we are facing right now, this aggressive pumping threatens to drain the local aquifer and run our residential and agricultural wells completely dry. Imagine waking up to find your family's water supply is simply gone. We should not have to fear for the basic water and resources our children and grandchildren rely on.

The same microscopic PM2.5 particles and chemical VOCs that make the current haze so hazardous are exactly what an active quarry and asphalt plant produce daily. Instead of a temporary weather event, our families will be forced to breathe silica dust and asphalt emissions constantly.

If the county grants these permits, they give away their power to protect us. The developers will secure their operation and their profits, and the county will not be able to shut it down—no matter how severely our water and air are compromised.

This project will turn a temporary environmental crisis into a daily, permanent reality for Hanover County. Let’s keep the pressure on our local officials to protect our A-1 districts, our water, and our health.  The meetings to vote on this project will be in September and October of this year.  Butts in seats count!  Plan on showing up to let the supervisors and planning commission know we want to keep our property and our health.
