Dear Supporters,
If you have ever rearranged your work schedule, scrambled for childcare, or given up an evening to speak out at a public hearing—only to have the developer pull a last-minute deferral and walk away—you know how broken our county's system is. IT IS DISREPECTFUL TO THE CITIZENS!
Developers are using loopholes to treat the public like an obstacle to be out-waited. We saw it recently with a local data center application. A full house at the planning commission meeting and the applicant deferred one hour before the meeting. We’ve seen it three separate times with the Luck Stone case on Verdon Road. Under the current flawed system, an applicant can repeatedly delay the process, reset the application clock for a full year, and completely exhaust public opposition—all for a $200 fee.
Local government should not make participation harder for citizens than it is for developers.
On Thursday, August 20th at 6:00 PM at the County Complex, the county will be considering changes to the deferral policy. This is our moment to show up, speak up, and demand real protections. We are fighting for mandatory transparency on the record, the elimination of closed-door administrative approvals, mandatory public comment on deferral requests, and strict limits/higher fees on repeated delays.
TWO THINGS YOU NEED TO DO RIGHT NOW:
1. Write to the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission. (email list is on our website) Demand that any new deferral policy includes mandatory citizen protections, elimination of staff-approved resets, and absolute transparency.
2. Mark your calendars for August 20th at 6:00 PM. We need a packed room at the Complex to speak for real, enforceable changes.
Spread the word, share our website, and let’s make sure our county officials remember who they actually represent.
