The Issue

For eight years, Crestview’s FL heavily populated west side was quiet, peaceful, and safe. Families could sleep through the night, children could play outside, and our homes felt like homes. But over the last two years, everything has changed. Aircraft activity from Bob Sikes Airport has increased so dramatically that our neighborhood is now overwhelmed by constant noise, low-altitude flights, and nonstop disruptions.

In recent months, the situation has become unbearable. Some days, aircraft begin flying low over the west side before 5:00 AM, long before the sun comes up. Other days, flights continue past midnight, shaking homes and keeping families awake. Many days have aircraft overhead all day long — morning, noon, evening, and late at night — with no break, no quiet hours, and no relief. Some days have two aircraft overhead at all times, and other days have five aircraft circling the community at once.

The noise is constant. The flights are low. The disruption never stops. My children are suffering, and our family no longer feels safe or comfortable in our own home. No parent should have to watch their children live under nonstop aircraft noise, and no family should be forced to endure this level of disruption day after day.

Meanwhile, the east side of the airport is wide open — fields and wooded land. There are no schools on the east side. Yet aircraft continue to fly over the heavily populated west side, directly over families, homes, and Walker Elementary School.

Walker Elementary School sits directly under these flight paths. Children hear loud aircraft noise throughout the school day, during recess, and during parent pickup. This is not normal for an elementary school environment, and it is not acceptable for young children to be exposed to this level of noise and stress.

Bob Sikes Airport has never completed an FAA Part 150 Noise Study, even though the west side community and Walker Elementary are directly impacted by airport operations. Without a Part 150 study, there are no protections, no mitigation, and no noise‑abatement procedures in place.

We, the residents and families of Crestview, request the following:

⭐ 1. East-Side Flight Pattern Only

Aircraft must use the east side of the airport for training, departures, and arrivals. The east side is open and wooded. The west side is heavily populated with homes, families, and an elementary school.

⭐ 2. FAA Part 150 Noise Study

Bob Sikes Airport must complete a full FAA Part 150 Noise Study to evaluate noise impacts on neighborhoods and schools and to establish noise‑abatement procedures.

⭐ 3. Quiet Hours

No training flights, engine‑revving, or low‑altitude operations over neighborhoods between  9AM and 8 PM.

⭐ 4. Low-Altitude Restrictions

No aircraft should fly below 2,000 feet over residential areas or Walker Elementary unless required for safety.

⭐ 5. No Radar-Off Operations

Aircraft must keep transponders and ADS‑B on at all times. Turning off radar hides flight paths and prevents accountability.

⭐ 6. Standard Left-Turn Departures

Aircraft must follow standard left‑turn departures at this non‑towered airport unless safety requires otherwise. Immediate right turns into neighborhoods and over Walker Elementary must stop.

⭐ 7. Full Runway Use

Aircraft must use the full runway for takeoff and landing. Using half the runway causes low, loud departures directly over homes and the school.

⭐ 8. No Engine-Revving for Extended Periods

Large aircraft must not sit on the runway revving engines for long periods, which creates extreme noise and vibration in nearby homes.

⭐ 9. Protection Zone Over Walker Elementary

Walker Elementary must be designated as a noise‑sensitive zone. Aircraft should not fly low over the school under any circumstances.

Our families deserve peace. Our children deserve safety. Our community deserves protection.

We ask Okaloosa County, Bob Sikes Airport, the School Board, and the FAA to take immediate action.

Signed, Residents, parents, and supporters of Crestview, FL
