Stop Louisiana's Attack on Out-of-State Abortion Providers
The Issue
Since Roe v. Wade was overturned, nearly all abortion has been banned in Louisiana. But abortion hasn’t disappeared—it’s just gone underground. Now, for many women in our state, the only remaining option is accessing medication abortion through doctors in states where it’s still legal.
Instead of addressing the crisis in maternal health or the skyrocketing number of women forced to seek care alone, Louisiana’s Attorney General Liz Murrill and Governor Jeff Landry are going after doctors in other states—criminalizing providers who legally prescribe abortion pills by mail.
This is a dangerous abuse of power.
In a recent case, the state filed felony charges against a California physician for providing legal, FDA-approved care to a Louisiana resident. Then, Gov. Landry requested the doctor’s extradition. Thankfully, California Governor Gavin Newsom refused—but the message from Louisiana officials was clear: they will stop at nothing to intimidate, punish, and isolate anyone helping people in this state access abortion, even from thousands of miles away.
These prosecutions don’t protect anyone. They won’t stop abortions. All they do is make reproductive care more dangerous, more confusing, and more likely to result in trauma or medical emergencies for people who already have nowhere else to turn.
Louisiana’s leaders must stop criminalizing out-of-state doctors who are acting within the law of their own states. These prosecutions waste taxpayer money, weaponize the legal system, and erode the rights of every Louisiana resident who still believes they should have a say over their own body.
We, the undersigned, call on:
- Attorney General Liz Murrill to drop the felony charges against out-of-state abortion providers;
- Governor Jeff Landry to end extradition efforts targeting doctors practicing legal medicine elsewhere;
- And members of the Louisiana State Legislature to publicly oppose this misuse of state resources.
Louisiana’s abortion ban is already extreme. Prosecuting doctors across state lines only adds cruelty and chaos. Stop the legal overreach. Let people get the care they need—without fear, punishment, or shame.
