Bella Scheider started this petition to PetSmart and

Mistreatment is abuse.

Everyday, most likely in your local PetSmart or Petco, a chinchilla is being held in harmful conditions. As fragile creatures, there are many ways a chinchilla could be injured, or die. Chinchillas cannot ingest plastic since it can cause something called an impaction. An impaction is when the digestive track is blocked and stops the flow of food, shutting down their systems and resulting in death. Disregarding this, pet stores continue to supply chinchillas with plastic wheels and plastic houses. Not only are they made of plastic, but the wheels are too small in diameter and hurt the chinchilla's back. Another major problem is the high temperature inside of the enclosure. These enclosures are sealed with glass, allowing no natural airflow and often times, more than 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Chinchillas were naturally found up high in the Andes Mountains and have thick, dense fur which requires them to be in temperatures no higher than 70 degrees. They cannot sweat the way humans do and can have heat strokes easily, resulting in death. Sometimes when you look at the chinchillas, you might think they look adorable sleeping up against the glass  however, this is a prominent sign of overheating. Another major health issue pertains to the chinchilla's diet. Chinchillas need to be fed a strict diet of constant timothy hay and essential alfalfa pellets. No veggies, no sugary treats, and no fruits. All the time, pet stores garnish the food bowls with sugary vegetable mixes. Upon all the health issues, pet store employees wind up rough handling the chinchilla's fragile body in order to show one to a costumer. Chinchillas have extremely fragile bones that are easy to break which is why they are not optimal pets for kids. As adorable as these critters may seem, chinchillas are not cats or rabbits and require sensitive care. If not researched thoroughly, you put a chinchilla at risk. Costumers are constantly misinformed by workers in the stores on how to care for these critters. When hired, employees are taught little to nothing about the animals they are looking after and selling. Often times, the employees themselves can even be told the wrong care information. The company only cares about making a sale and not about the life they are giving away. On top of all this, these poor chinchillas sit in filthy factories only to then be put into dangerous enclosures.

Pet stores like PetSmart and Petco DO NOT put the time and effort into taking care of their pets. They are careless in providing safe enclosures, they put no time into educating their employees, and they put unhealthy pets up for sale. This is NOT a safe environment for chinchillas and they must be withdrawn from the industry immediately. If we all stand up for the chinchillas, we can make a change.

Fight for knowledge. Fight for better conditions. Fight for the chinchillas.
