The Issue

We, the residents of Brooklyn, strongly oppose Lincoln Restler's proposed legislation to increase fines for alternate side parking violations. This proposal would unfairly burden hardworking individuals and families who are already struggling to make ends meet.

According to the New York City Department of Transportation, there are approximately 2.5 million registered vehicles in Brooklyn alone. With limited parking options available, it is often difficult for residents to find a spot on the street during alternate side parking hours. Increasing fines will only exacerbate this problem and create more financial stress for those who cannot afford private garages or driveways.

Furthermore, studies have shown that higher fines do not necessarily lead to increased compliance with parking regulations. In fact, many drivers may simply choose to ignore the rules altogether if they feel that the penalties are too severe.

Rather than punishing residents with excessive fines, we urge Mr. Restler and other lawmakers to focus on finding solutions that will improve parking availability and reduce congestion in our neighborhoods.

We call on our elected officials to reject this unfair proposal and work towards a more equitable solution for all Brooklynites.
