Stop light pollution in Duluth, Minnesota

The Issue

Growing up in Duluth, Minnesota, one of the most enchanting experiences was gazing up at the night sky, getting lost in the myriad of twinkling stars and the vastness of the Milky Way. However, in recent years, this beautiful vision has been stolen from us. Many residents, including myself, have expressed concern that we have not been able to see the night sky, not even once, due to the overwhelming light pollution.

Light pollution is not just a minor inconvenience; it is an environmental concern that affects both wildlife and human health. Excessive artificial light disrupts ecosystems and can have severe repercussions on local wildlife that depend on natural darkness. It interferes with the routine of nocturnal animals and migratory birds, leading to disorientation and sometimes death. Furthermore, for humans, exposure to high levels of artificial light can disrupt sleep patterns, suppress immune systems, and even increase the risk of certain health conditions.

Duluth can become a leading example of how to manage urban lighting in a way that preserves our night sky while maintaining public safety. A realistic solution includes implementing more intelligent lighting solutions, such as using shielded fixtures that direct light downwards instead of upwards, installing motion sensors to minimize unnecessary lighting, and advocating for the use of warm-colored LED lights which are less disruptive.

We call upon the Duluth City Council and local businesses to take actionable steps to reduce light pollution. This could include revising municipal lighting codes to encourage responsible lighting practices, investing in community awareness programs about the importance of dark skies, and initiating partnerships with local universities to study and develop new techniques for reducing light spill.

Neighbors, awake at dawn and see the stars that's part of our natural heritage. Imagine a sky once more filled with stars, a community appreciating a restored natural environment. Please sign this petition to bring back our starry nights. Together, we can reduce light pollution and rediscover the joys of our night sky in Duluth.
