Stop LB 21 - Keep Nebraska's Electoral System in Place.

The Issue

Since 1991, Nebraska's electoral votes have been assigned by congressional district, as opposed to a "winner take all" scenario like the rest of the nation (except Maine who also divides its votes by congressional district).

Because of this unique rule, for the first time in decades, all three major presidential contenders campaigned in Omaha - Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain - in 2008.

I think assigning a portion of electoral votes to each district is far more fair. It helps to empower the minority party in each state. Also, it means candidates need to pay attention to all Americans, not just the states with the most electoral votes up for grabs.

Economically LB 21 is a mistake. I would estimate between Lee Terry, Barack Obama and myself, our campaigns spent between $4-$5 million in Omaha - for media buys, staff, leases, etc. This would not have happened if the 2nd District's vote was not up for grabs.

For Omaha, it means we matter. This is a good thing, regardless of which party wins the electoral vote. Tell your State Senator to vote against changing Nebraska's electoral system.
