The Issue

Hi,

We are all aware of the extreme, and pretty much irreversible damage we have caused our oceans and planet. We are all trying to make changes to help prevent this going any further - which is incredible - but we also need to seriously look at how and what we are fishing.

Commercial fishing has depleted 90% of the apex predators in the ocean, this is bad news for a number of reasons, some of them being:

1) All species in the ocean are now having to change how THEY live and what they eat, there's less of their usual prey (It should be us who first changes our food, and looks at where we obtain it from!).

2) The bycatch of industrial fishing is shocking. So many species are being accidentally over fished, dying before the fishing boats have a chance return the "illegal catch" fish to their habitat.

3) All creatures need the oceans and all species within it to survive. This is a simple yet extreme and valid reason!

There are also so so many more reasons we need to stop overfishing. Personally, i feel that 100 million sharks being killed for their fins alone is completely unacceptable, Never mind the sharks also caught in nets and lost this way.

If we carry on the way we're going, we will all have to change what we eat from the ocean, as there won't be anything "usual" left... so why not make a change now? And stop industrial and overfishing and put more laws and regulations in place to ensure any fish are caught sustainably and, if one species has been fished for a while, then change to another.

We cannot continue having all types of fish all the time at our disposal. They are not in infinate supply.

Billions of people around the world survive Solely by sustainable fishing, such as spear fishing on the Solomon Islands, for example. They have noticed a severe drop in what they are able to survive on - because big ships are destroying entire ecosystems and the balance of nature.

Even in Alaska, where commercial fishing is closely monitored, and designed to allow stock replenishment, they're noticing fewer & fewer fish.

We need to also introduce A LOT MORE "No take zones". A worrying 5% of the ocean is protected... the ocean contains 99% of the habitable surface of the planet - and we can only see to protect 5% of it?! No.

More no take zones, more marine parks, NO trawler fishing (watch "Wild Islands", David Attenborough, there is a sequence which shows the absolute destruction of habitats - and, well, I cried. A lot).

If we PAY people who need the money to fish sustainably, then we're helping others out of poverty, getting better quality fish ourselves and NOT causing endless unnecessary bycatch.

We can do this. We have to do this. I have stopped eating any sort of fish. Completely. It is the only way.

Its one drop in a very large, planet sized, ocean. But, like everything else, if more people come together and take action, the more powerful it will be.

The oceans are destroyed. Already. We are already consuming microplastics in the fish people eat.

Making less fish available, but ALL sustainable & better quality will improve literally countless lives. And allow countless species a chance at recovery.

The whales were saved by international treaties and now it's time to go further - save as many species as we can, and the planet at the same time....
