The Issue

I am starting this petition because of the personal and heart-wrenching struggle that my own family is facing. My daughters, despite their hard work and clean rental histories, are living out of a motel with their families. They have jobs but finding housing has become an insurmountable challenge because of the soaring rents and unfair income requirements imposed by landlords—expecting tenants to earn three times the rent amount.

This situation is not just personal. It is a widespread issue affecting countless families not only in our local community but across the nation. Many hardworking individuals and families are priced out of secure housing due to these criteria, which are especially impossible to meet because wages have not kept pace with increasing rental demands. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, in 2023, there was a shortage of over 7 million affordable rental homes available to extremely low income renters, and this gap is only widening.

Landlords mandating that tenants earn triple the rent neglects the harsh economic realities faced by today's working class. People with stable income and no eviction history are being overlooked simply due to a policy that does not take into consideration the current wage stagnation. This is leading to homelessness, and it is disrupting families and communities.

We need local governments to intervene and provide regulations that ensure rental housing is accessible and affordable. Landlords should not have the authority to set such unreachable benchmarks without considering housing affordability legislation or caps on rent increases. We propose that rental qualification guidelines should incorporate more realistic income-to-rent ratios.

Thus, it is imperative that we urge our city and state officials to step in and regulate these exploitative practices that keep reliable, hardworking people homeless. We want policies enacted that limit rent hikes and modify the income requirement thresholds for rental qualifications.

Please sign this petition to show your support for more equitable housing policies that can bring about a meaningful change for families like mine and countless others across our community. Together, we can make housing fairness a reality. Sign and share this petition today!
