OBJECT TO PLANNING APPLICATION 16/12087/FUL to turn Kingston Market House, Market Place, Kington-Upon-Thames, KT1 1JS into a PIZZA RESTAURANT, (See Planning Ref: 16/12087/FUL at www.kingston.gov.uk in favor of current occupants, 'Kingston’s Creative Heart' Shop.
Kingston Market House is currently occupied by ‘Kingston’s Creative Heart’ supporting over 40 small, local businesses selling British handmade products, a tea room and fabric shop and also offers creative workshops for the community and social craft groups with the potential to add historic talks and tourist information.
Keep this historic landmark accessible to the local community and a platform for local businesses to sell.
HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT REASONS YOU SHOULD SIGN THIS PETITION:
1. Kingston market house should be free to the public to appreciate rather than having to ‘buy into’ an external chain to view.
2. Unique visitor attraction for a Royal Borough (Kingston-Upon-Thames) that adds character, an identity and a reason to visit from surrounding areas that already have chain restaurant/shops
3. There is nowhere like 'Kingston's Creative Heart' in Kingston that provides local and aspiring creative businesses with a platform to sell.
4. 'Kingston’s Creative Heart' adds narrative to visitor experience with artisan food traders on the outside and grass trail leading to artisan craft traders on the inside, this tells a story and is a REAL attraction.
5. More potential footfall as shopping destination to visit shop rather than a pizza chain restaurant
6. Potential to include tourist information, historic talks and more workshops
7. Putting Kingston on the map for independent, local shopping to strike a balance between high street and community and maintain town identity.
8. An opportunity for Kingston Council to preserve Kingston’s cultural heritage and support local enterprise
9. Sympathetic to building, keeping original staircase and interior features intact rather than proposed plans to remove (view planning ref:16/12087/FUL).
10. Planning application would include outdoor seating usage and possible late licensing to sell alcohol, which would increase noise levels (in acoustic market square) and waste produce.
11.The proposed restaurant are 51% owned by a brewery with an extensive cider menu. All the retailers, residents and shoppers will be affected by people drinking if a late night license is approved which could make the center feel unsafe or unwelcoming.
12.A restaurant chain that has a strong emphasis on a drinks menu could also attract a different crowd of people and put off families who enjoy the square in the summer.
13. Increased rubbish and waste surrounding market place.
14. Plans for outdoor seating area would impact on Spring/Summer markets or Christmas Gift Markets LOSING “potential for events and special occasions” due to logistical/safety issues and competition for food/drink markets and surrounding pubs/cafes.
15. Sympathetic to existing fruit and vegetable, food stalls (who currently include pizza stall) and surrounding food and drink outlets; plans would mean their businesses would lose custom or be displaced.
16. Tea rooms provide a unique treat for visitors/tourists working partnership with market traders using produce for fresh lunch-time menu (not serving anything that is in direct competition with local business) and are in character with building.
17. Personable, knowledgeable and quality service provided by local businesses that staff shop and can advise visitors on local attractions/knowledge.
18. Community hub putting people in-touch with local businesses and potential to order directly, meet like-minded creatives, make contacts/friends at workshops, book tearooms or workshops for special occasions (ie. hen parties, baby showers, birthdays …)
19. Maintaining Kingston’s Heritage for selling local produce
20. Access to public toilets will not be available any longer
