Stop killing the animals!! Set up trap and return programs for wild cats and shelter the pet ones till they find a home.
The Issue
This is a subject that I've touched on a few times now within the last year. In regards to Wausau, Wisconsin and the city Council members. It has just been progressively getting worse. I feel it has gone too far now that the city is actually going back in time and killing cats within hours of catching them. They're claiming that they can tell if a cat is someone's pet or not. This is not true because I myself own cats that people think are wild but they are my pets.
By law they are supposed to give each animal seven days to be claimed by its owner. However, they have stated that they plan on breaking the law and giving cats no time, if they feel the cat is wild. If THEY FEEL the cat is not wild and someone's pet, then they will allow the cat to live for seven days before Killing it. This is so outrageous and such a step backwards in time. This is going to be like Larry the pet cat from Nebraska shot by a cop all over again!!
I have gone to city meetings and spoken up along with the entire community and the Humane Society. Yet the city Council refuses to acknowledge us.
I'm at a loss to know what more I can possibly do, when the city Council refuses to listen to so many people that show up at the meetings and e-mail them.
It's our money and they are supposed to take our opinions into consideration. However, they are not doing it whatsoever at all. I think it's very obvious if you read the other newspaper article that I included, (Riverfront development) what is more important to them. On the same page it speaks of the riverfront property that the city is developing. It speaks of how they have spent millions and millions of dollars in developing this area. Disgustingly this is why they're taking all the money away from the pets.
I have volunteered at Humane Society's for the last several years in surrounding counties and they all have trap return programs for wildcats and their pet cats they keep on till they can find a home for. I know of one cat in particular that they had for two years before she found a home. But she did find a good home. This is what our country has come to expect and has been able to accomplish. The people do not want to take a step back in time like what the council members of Wausau, Wisconsin are doing. We can do better and our pets deserve better!! Please help us get out from under these money hungry pet killers!
I'm asking the animal community to please help us in Wausau, Wisconsin. We have done all we know to do and the city still refuses to listen to us. You can read in this article where they say that the humane officer is actually going to be killing cats without even taking them to a shelter to save money. Is this not disgusting?? Is this not cave man days behavior??
I've included two attachments for the newspaper articles.Lisa Rasmussen Has been the person leading the charge to have all the animals killed. I actually have her on tape and a city Council meeting saying that she thinks all the animals should be killed when they come into the shelter.
Wausau originally made the national news about a year and half to two years ago about a family that was fined for having four dogs. This is because Wausau as a no more than two dogs and tree cats policy. However, two of these dogs were very old and on their last legs. Wausau also started enforcing the three cats Policy and they will not allow you to foster. The city does not have a fostered program and will not allow you to foster. This pet issue has this been progressively getting worse and I think that there should be a story done on this topic to update it. Please help me get the story national attention. I can't do this alone and we need help. We need your help!
I have Include a copy of the law. The law is stated very clearly that they cannot kill pets upon receiving them. They must give them a period of time to be claimed. The chairpersons of Wausau are boldly breaking the law with no consequences.
B. Shelter’s duties to a stray, unidentified animal
Humane societies do not gain title immediately to an animal that is unlicensed. [35] Shelters must still hold an unlicensed animal for a minimum amount of time, and must make reasonable efforts to find the owner. Due to the overwhelming number of animals in a shelter, reasonable efforts include posting a list of found animals at the shelter. [36] Such lists contain information as to the type of dog found, a general description of the animal’s appearance, where the animal was found, and when it was found. When an animal is brought in, the shelter must add it to the list; generally, such lists are kept in chronological order with the most recently found animals listed first. Persons searching for their lost animal can look through the list or obtain information from the shelter over the phone. In general, courts will uphold the decision of a humane society to adopt out an animal, as long the humane society has complied with any necessary statutory requirements, such as the minimum holding period. [37]This policy protects the shelter against lawsuits from owners who do not make reasonable efforts to find their animals.
