STOP KILLING SRI LANKAN ELEPHANTS

The Issue

Sri Lanka is blessed with abundant beauty and resources, a country bestowed with diverse climates and lush landscapes. Growing up in this paradise, I've always been proud of our rich biodiversity and harmonious environment. However, the brutal reality is that this harmony is under acute threat. Daily, elephants, one of our nation's most majestic creatures, are being slaughtered mercilessly. This tragedy unfolds primarily because human settlements encroach continuously into forest areas, disrupting the natural habitat of these gentle giants.

In villages that now sit in the heart of elephant territories, these animals often stray into nearby human developments in search of food. This inevitable contact results in farmers being armed with firearms and explosives to keep the wildlife at bay, leading to terrifyingly high numbers of elephant fatalities. With potent weapons in their hands, villagers are often forced into violent confrontations, not just to protect their livelihoods but also out of fear and misunderstanding.

Nevertheless, this should not be the path forward. It is crucial to acknowledge that our elephants are not intruders or criminalized beasts; they are a part of our ecological heritage that needs nurturing and protection. It pains me to see this senseless cycle of violence where, instead, there can be an approach of understanding, coexistence, and protection.

I urge the Sri Lankan government to take immediate and concrete actions to halt the establishment of new human settlements within or near forest reserves. Furthermore, it is vital that the government cease the distribution of weapons to villagers as a means to resolve human-elephant conflicts. Instead, we should prioritize non-lethal deterrents, community education programs to improve human-elephant relations, and comprehensive woodland management policies to ensure these creatures can roam freely and safely.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a peaceful coexistence with nature, a thrust towards honoring our wildlife, and securing a proud and sustainable future for generations to come. Please join us in demanding the protection of our elephants and the rural communities that live alongside them. Let us make Sri Lanka a beacon of hope and stewardship for the natural world.
