A highly endangered bird, the Cassin’s Auklet, only lays one egg a year and lives on a few little islands off the coast of BC. These birds are endangered due to oil spills, avian flu, and human interference and habitat loss. However, the hunting, commercial fishing, and oil industries are blaming introduced animals like raccoons, mink, rats, cats, and otters, who sometimes eat the eggs. The truth is, these animals are opportunistic eaters, and will eat what is most common, not eggs that are far and few between. Animals can only establish when there is a niche gap, and these animals have predators like wolves, bald eagles, etc.
Absolutely horrible that raccoons, rats, and mink are shot, trapped, killed, and, in the case of rats, poison bombed. Cats are probably killed too. They are not the cause of auklet decline. Poisons kill all sorts of non target animals, including birds, and killing is incredibly cruel. If raccoons, mink, otters, cats, and rats need to be managed, please use contraception and spay/neuter programs. And most of all, remove anthropogenic food sources like waste disposal bins. Use the bear proof bins that are common on the mainland.
