The Butchalla First Nation recently buried the innocent Wongari who were executed by white government officials for a crime they never committed.
Da’Buthbi Galangoor all,
I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to the journey and completion of the Wongari Burial Ceremony.
To the BAC Directors who were involved-particularly Tori Robe‑Broome and Jade Gould-thank you for your leadership, guidance, and cultural strength throughout this process. Your commitment ensured that this ceremony was carried out with the dignity, respect, and cultural integrity it deserved.
To our Operational Managers, Tessa Waia and Chantel Van Wamelen, thank you for the immense work undertaken behind the scenes—coordinating logistics, managing communications, providing guidance, and preparing our staff on the ground. Your efforts ensured that everything ran smoothly and respectfully.
To the BAC staff (Lead Myles Broome, BLSR team and Lead Bob Broome, NIAA team) assisted with onsite preparation, escorting Butchullas and wongaris in a last Wongari territorial patrol convoy to Burial site, thank you for the care you brought to your work. The site was prepared with respect, sensitivity, and comfort, creating the right environment for ceremony.
To the BNTAC staff who supported us on the day, your presence and assistance were deeply appreciated.
To the QPWS staff, thank you for your assistance in preparing the site and for giving us the space required to undertake this important cultural ceremony with
Butchulla representatives and family Elders. Your support helped ensure the day proceeded safely and respectfully.
Butchulla Families and Elders, thank you to those who spoke kind, respectful remembrance words which will be cherished from all.
The ceremony was a beautiful and honourable send‑off for the Wongari.
May our Wongari spirits rest peacefully, returning to Biral in the East-where the sun rises and life begins.
Thank you all for your cultural respect, cooperation, and dedication to this significant moment.
Let’s work together to prevent this ever happening again 🐾👣
