Hi Nicole,

Thanks for sharing this; it's such an important cause.  Unfortunately, we sometimes see bears act predatorily. It is, however, rare. A high percentage of fatalities are related to the bear getting into human food prior to the attack.  I heard that Maple Ridge was working toward BearSmart status, but the provincial government has frozen funding.  The municipality and the province need to fund a bear-resistant bin program in Maple Ridge and continue working toward a BearSmart program.  I would encourage you to contact WildSafe BC to see how you can support them, as they oversee the distribution of funding to communities and may know who is or has been working on BearSmart in Maple Ridge.  I am sure they would appreciate your help.
