Hello I wanted to update everybody, Meridian Pacific Ltd. has began to market the property online. Units are going for over 1.3 Million Dollars. This project will have no local housing and is designed on top of a hawaiian cave burial site. Those caves also contain 2 endangered species that are found nowhere else in the world!
NO Local Housing
These outdated developments were originally approved based on the agreement there would be lots sold to local families. After decades of going back and forth eventually all local housing was scrapped. Yes the county has built some affordable apartments, BUT no matter how long a family pays rent they can never own the apartment. The children of kauai no longer have yards to play in, most are forced to live in affordable housing and still struggle to survive. This entire area is multi million dollar homes and this development will further worse the gentrification.
This is cultural genocide and should in NO way be considered a viable excuse while dozens of multiple Million Dollar homes are built in return. This is further displacing the local community while raising the cost of living and property taxes from local families that are lucky enough to own their home.
The fact that the planning department is even moving forward with any more tourist accommodations at this time is unthinkable. Or these gentrified Multi Million Dollar developments that are pushing out the local community.
The county of Kauai has recently consolidated 2 lots on this property. Despite never being on a public agenda for final approval. They are using the “Third Party Agreement” signed on Christmas Eve 2003. The county of kauai attorney who signed off on that agreement is now working for Gary Pinkston. This agreement contains a condition stating that “any lot subdivision is equal to building permits”.
Til this day the Burial Registration and Lineal Descendant forms sent to state historical preservation division (SHPD) have never been processed. Despite us vocalizing our concerns, speaking out a multiple meetings and having lineal descendants come forward. SHPD is seemingly allowing them to move forward with the development.
They have been spraying this property with poison for months. It has been confirmed with the US fish and wildlife service (USFWS) as containing critical habitat for 2 endangered species plus other native birds and plants. A complaint was also filed with department of Ag.
Meridian Pacific recently had a native plant inventory survey conducted on the property. Keep in mind this survey was conducted after months of poison spraying.
Koloa Cave Spider and Koloa Cave Amphipod are known to flee area’s that contain heavy amounts of poison. Are they also spraying this poison in hopes that the endangered species will flee?
There is a huge conflict of interest between this developer and The County Of Kauai. The county Development Manager quit her position with the county for Meridian Pacific Ltd. last year! Just weeks after Gary presented a payout offer to housing agency. He also currently has 2-3 prior County Attorneys with inside knowledge of this property now legally representing him.
When the county council voted on the payout from Gary in 2021 none of them knew about the “third party agreement.” why is the county and Planning Commision not disclosing information like this to our own county council members who are making a huge decision that’s going to future generations for hundreds of years
This is Cultural genocide they are erasing indigenous history and gentrifying the community bringing in thousands of outsiders, they are increasing the cost of living that’s already sky high. At a time like now when local housing is that such a crucial point and the local community of being pushed out
A complaint was filed for bulldozer damage that occurred last year with no proper permits. We filed with the County Of Kauai, Department of land and natural resources (DLNR) and State Historic Preservation Division(SHPD)
why are we prioritizing tourism over local housing issues. Hawaiians are homeless on their homeland! What is being done to protect future generations?
