The Issue

An out-of-state developer for Jiffy Lube is applying to the City of Reno for a permit to locate a shop on a tiny lot in a school zone at the corner of Hunter Lake and Mayberry Drive. The proposed site is a complicated 5-way intersection that includes Charles Drive. The site is also located just two doors down to the east of Reno Fire Station 5.  A drive-through quick lube in a school zone that will increase traffic and have cars entering and exiting in a popular intersection for children walking to multiple schools is a big safety concern for residents.  The location is less than 500 feet from Hunter Lake Elementary School, less than a mile to Swope Middle School and Reno High School, which all have students commonly utilizing this intersection to travel to school, many of which are pedestrians. Large numbers of bicycle enthusiasts also use this intersection as a popular route for road bikes in town. If allowed to locate in this primarily residential area, Jiffy Lube would obviously create increased traffic and congestion and safety concerns as the entrance and exit are in this frequently used intersection. Until January 2025 drive through businesses were not allowed in neighborhood commercial zones, presumably for the impact drive through traffic would have on the neighborhood.  Two other quick lube businesses already occur less than a mile away in a non-residential location. A Jiffy Lube at this location provides zero enrichment to the neighborhood, does not encourage pedestrian use of the business, an emphasis of neighborhood commercial zoned businesses, and has serious safety concerns as it is located in a pedestrian friendly school zone.   Please sign this petition to tell the City to Stop the Jiffy Lube !
