Supporters, California has a chance to pass urgent legislation to restore net neutrality protections in the state, starting with Senate Bill 822 (SB 822) by State Senator Scott Wiener. The bill would restore all of the net neutrality protections in California that were stripped away by the FCC last year. SB 822 is about to be heard for the first time in the Senate Energy Committee, but Big Telecom has already started funneling their vast resources into destroying the bill before it even gets off the ground. Today, we’re joining a day of action with a broad coalition to fight Big Telecom and demand action from our legislators through calls and social media. This is where you come in. The senators on the Senate Energy Committee are vital to pushing this bill forward. Can you call and demand they not bow down to Big Telecom and instead push SB 822 forward? Call 1-844-336-0046 and demand the Senate Energy Committee support California’s net neutrality bill, SB 822. Here's a call script that you can use as guidance when you get on the phone with the senator: "Hi, my name is __________ and I live in Los Angeles. I'm calling to ask for your support for SB 822 by Senator Scott Wiener -- California's net neutrality bill. It's being heard in the Senate Energy Committee soon and major internet companies are trying to stop it. The bill is the most comprehensive net neutrality legislation in any state and will ensure that the internet remains open and free for all Californians. Please do everything you can to prevent it from being gutted or watered down by lobbyists and pass it as originally proposed. Thank you." Once the net neutrality repeal goes into effect, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T will be allowed to charge us to access different websites and services. But SB 822 would restore in California the net neutrality protections gutted by the FCC’s disastrous decision last year. If passed, ISPs would be prohibited from blocking content, slowing certain sites or services, or charging new fees for users and companies to reach audiences online. Eighty-three percent of Americans want a free and open Internet. SB 822 would fill this gap for Californians after the FCC stripped consumers of their rights. But Big Telecom lobbyists are using all their resources to block SB 822 which would restore protections for us.
