Update:
Mom is at this very moment 6/9 @ 12:31pm at the ER being worked on and getting scans as possible sepsis or another stroke.
Presby Hospital all of a sudden on May 22nd, notified us that she was being discharged from Trama/ICU. They were waiting on a specialized ambulance for transfer. Again, doesn't need specialized medical care via Acute Long-Term Hospital but requires specialized ambulance and transfer staff. They could not find one that day. This was the beginning of Memorial Day Weekend. Saturday 5/23, call from Dr. Darby at Presby stating that he cancelled discharge as mom had air in her lower intestine and belly and he didn't feel comfortable discharging her. Sunday my dad travels out to see her. We were given ONLY 2 choices in her transfer Transitions Healthcare located in Washington, PA. A 3 hour away facility one way. They only had 1 bed or Philly healthcare again only 1 bed available. Due to being pushed to sign documents as Aetna was done paying due to doctor's changing their initial documentation stating that mom was stable enough to go to a skilled nursing facility. We had no choice and then with only 1 bed at each facility we were shoved up against a wall. I did as much research as I could, and both facilities were below par rating only 3.2 out of a 5. Philly mentioned nothing about ventilators, so we made the decision to send mom to Transitions. Sunday 5/24 my father went out to see my mother and Dr. Darby was there. He stated he was again signing discharge paperwork. Dad asked him directly, "This transitions healthcare will be equipped to handle the care my mother needs". Doc responded, "I don't know it's a nursing home".
On 5/26, my mother was transferred to Transitions. Dad arrived 2 hours after she arrived at facility. The place is old, stinks, and stuff was thrown all over the place. Mom was in a room with another person. She was still not properly hooked up even after 2 hours of being there. Call button was on the floor. Dad left there so devastated. He came home and broke down as in our eyes WE failed her. We couldn't keep her out of a nursing home and get her into a proper facility. We were and still are in the appeal process regarding Aetna's denial and Maximus upholding Aetna's decision. Even with this, Presby one day was going to try old school to get her off the ventilator to the next day she is all of a sudden stable for transfer.
Now, to me this sounds like someone came down on them and advised that either payment was done ASAP or that she was to me removed from the facility ASAP. Either way this was a huge mistake on their part! Mom is now fighting for her life again!
Transitions is disgusting and my mother should have NEVER been placed there. She should have ONLY been discharged to a hospital. Transitions missed mom's entire documentation in the chart that she was to be placed in a chair at least 1 - 2 times daily. Rotated and moved every 1-2 hours weather in bed or in chair. Mom laid in a bed for 11 days with no chair or constant rotation. Nursing coming in to do workup or peg-line, etc., no gloves. Call button hanging on IV or on floor out of reach of my mother. Dirty, soiled lines just thrown on the floor. Call button pushed and 45min to an hour for a response. Then, on 6/6 my father went into her room and she had previously been sitting up on Wednesday, smiling, able to communicate and attentive. Now, Sunday 6/6 she was lying flat, starring at the ceiling, sweating, and lethargic. Dad, had 3 hours to think about this as with nurse having no gloves, which he did address her about it. Mom was not acting right. We called out there and excuse of why she was that way was because as per their response she had a bad day on 6/5 regarding ventilator and being off it for so long. That didn't sit right with us. We demanded blood work be done and they stated that they would reach out to on call doctor. No response from them so after 35min we contacted them again. Told that doctor didn't see her it was over phone and he placed orders for blood work Monday. Absolutely, not we demanded she be taken to ER. Mom had a UTI and was put on antibiotics. Hospital tried to find a coded reason for her to be admitted but there was none so they had to release her back to transitions.
It is now 6/9, my dad went out there today and mom was still not doing good and just didn't appear to be with it. At first, we both thought it could still be the UTI and her being on antibiotics. When dad returned to her room it was apparent something was wrong and her blood pressure started dropping. Ambulance was called and she was transported to ER at UPMC Washington Hospital.
Mom is being worked on at this very moment and getting scans of her head, etc. She is either septic or she may have had another stroke. I am waiting for an update but per my father, "it doesn't look good".
My mother should have NEVER been discharged and again this is why insurance companies need to be held accountable for their actions as well as stripped of their power to make decisions based of kickbacks, money, and only seeing us as number in their games. Had the proper decision been made from the very beginning she might now be where she is currently. Had something not happened to where Presby disregarded all common sense and medical procedures, forcing to sign discharge papers, my mother may not be in this situation. Had Transitions followed discharge instructions and actually was able to handle my mother's medical needs, my mother may not be in this situation.
This is unacceptable and we are only 1 family that is speaking up of what we are going through. Although, there are 1000's out there that have experienced this same or relatively close to the same situation. Then there are those that have no one that are just put in these places to pass with no one to fight for them.
We need to stop this NOW! We need to start standing up for what is right and put an end to the greed of these companies. The lining of their pockets and those that are accepting these kickbacks are just as much to blame and should be held accountable for every single person that put a number and price tag on. They allowed loved ones to die because the money meant more to them then the health and life of a human.
I am asking you to share this and continue to get this out there. We are making progress and the more signatures we get the more involved and widespread this petition will reach. It will also maybe cross the path of someone who still has enough decency to do the right thing and put human life before anything else.
THE TIME IS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
