Stop Instacart's Exploitation of Shoppers: Demand Fair Pay and Practices Now!

The Issue

As Instacart shoppers, we are the backbone of a multibillion-dollar company, delivering groceries to homes across the country and keeping your CEOs fed. But behind the scenes, we face unfair, exploitative practices that undervalue our labor and put us in financial distress.

Instacart refuses to pay us minimum wage, and while we work tirelessly, we are forced to navigate a broken system that devalues our effort. We demand change—fair pay, transparency, and respect for the work we do to keep Instacart running.

Here are the ten critical issues we demand Instacart address immediately:

1. Fair Pay for Every Hour Worked: Instacart refuses to guarantee minimum wage for shoppers. We often earn far less than we deserve after accounting for hours spent waiting for orders or driving long distances. This must end now. No shopper should be paid below minimum wage for the work they do.

2. Adequate Compensation for Combined Orders: Instacart bundles unpicked orders due to poor tips without offering additional compensation. This practice exploits shoppers, who are expected to perform extra work without fair pay.

3. Stop Manipulating Base Pay with Tips: Instacart allows tips to affect base pay, reducing what shoppers could otherwise earn for an order. Our wages should not be subsidized by customers. Instacart must separate base pay from tipping to ensure transparency and fairness.

4. Mileage Reimbursement for Wear and Tear: Shoppers are forced to cover vehicle costs with no help from Instacart. We demand mileage reimbursement for the wear and tear on our cars. Driving for Instacart shouldn’t cost us more than we make.

5. Stricter Policies Against Fraudulent Claims: Too often, customers falsely claim they didn’t receive an item, and Instacart takes their word over ours. This practice must end. Instacart needs stricter verification processes to protect shoppers from unfair penalties.

6. A Fair Chance for Current Shoppers: With new shoppers constantly added to the platform, existing shoppers face unsustainable competition. Instacart should place new shoppers on a waiting list to ensure fair distribution of orders among current workers.

7. Additional Compensation for Apartment Deliveries: Delivering to high-rise buildings or apartments, especially on upper floors, costs us valuable time. We demand extra compensation for these deliveries to make up for lost time and effort.

8. Total Transparency in Pay Structures: Shoppers deserve to know exactly how we are paid, what factors affect our wages, and where our money goes. We demand full transparency from Instacart in how pay is calculated and distributed.

9. End Tip Baiting: Tip baiting, where customers lure shoppers with high tips only to reduce them later, is common and damaging. Instacart’s two-hour tip reduction window allows this behavior to flourish. We demand Instacart remove the tip reduction window and implement a thorough review process for tip disputes to protect shoppers from manipulation.

10. Bonus Compensation for 5-Star Service: When we go above and beyond to provide excellent service, the customer may appreciate it, but Instacart takes all the credit. Shoppers who consistently receive 5-star ratings should be rewarded with bonus compensation for enhancing the customer experience and ensuring Instacart’s continued success.

We will no longer tolerate Instacart's exploitation. It’s time for shoppers to be treated fairly, with wages and working conditions that reflect the value we bring to the company.

Sign this petition to demand that Instacart change its corrupt practices and treat its workers with the respect and fairness we deserve. If Instacart continues to ignore our demands, we will call for mass action—up to and including a boycott of the service that depends on our hard work.
