Stop inhumane conditions & inmate deaths in America's jail's & demand accountability
The Issue
To try and tally a number of inmate deaths in county jails due to negligence in 2024 alone proved to be an impossible feat that just lead me down a rabbit hole of one news story after another.
After a simple Google search the other night, I was sick by the time I realized the number was far greater than I could have ever imagined. Inmates in county jails still awaiting their day in court or arrested for simple misdemeanors handed down death sentences and left to die in a cold jail cell. Deprived of life saving medical care, mental health services and just downright inhumane living conditions are just some of what you may be facing for something as small as a misdemeanor charge.
India Cummings was a 27-year-old female who died on February 21, 2016 of acute renal failure that resulted in cardiac arrest while at the Buffalo general hospital.
She had been in the custody of the Erie County Sheriff at the Erie County Holding Center from February 1, 2016 to February 17, 2016 after her arrest by the Lackawana Police Department, Cummings was released from custody while hospitalized following a cardiac arrest that occurred at the Holding Center on 2/17/16. The Medical Review Board has found that the medical and mental health care provided to Cummings by Erie County during her course of incarceration and her care, custody, and safekeeping by Erie County Sheriff Deputies was so grossly incompetent and inadequate as to shock the conscience. Had Cummings received adequate and appropriate medical and mental health care and supervision and intervention from the beginning of her incarceration, her death would have been prevented.
As Cummings’ deteriorating health began
after receiving traumatic injury to her arm during her arrest and then being subject
to continued neglect during her incarcertion. The Medical Review Board opines that her death should be ruled as homicide due to Medical neglect.
The only way to get ahead of and end this barbaric abuse is demand 100% transparency in our jails!
- Every correction officer be required to wear a body cam at all times while on the clock.
- The correction officer not have control of turning the cam on or off and the cam must be on as soon as said officer clocks in for their shift and not turned off until they clock out.
- The body cams remain online and an internal affairs department audit body cams randomly so as no one correction officer knows when his/her cam is being live viewed.
- Swift punishment and accountability for correction officers found violating, harming and or neglecting inmates.
It's time to take a stand for something that should have never slipped through the cracks. Don't wait until it's your loved one or you yourself facing such deplorable treatment. Someone has to be held accountable before any change will be made!
