I have called Ford County, Kansas, home for over 50 years. During this time, I have built a life, nurtured a family, and established deep roots in this community. Our county is known for its open spaces, serene environment, and the rich agricultural heritage that many have worked tirelessly to preserve.

But now, our home is under threat from the looming encroachment of industrial developments such as data centers, solar farms, battery storage facilities, gas turbine power plants, and wind generators. While technological progress is inevitable, the unchecked expansion of these facilities in our landscapes is set to disrupt our way of life, harm our local ecology, and permanently alter the character of our communities.

These industrial projects pose significant challenges. For one, they consume vast expanses of land, regions that could otherwise serve our community’s agriculture, recreation, and natural beauty. Not to mention the environmental impacts: the potential for increased noise, pollution, precious water usage/waste, and the risk to our local wildlife. The beauty and tranquility that Ford County offers are at stake.

It’s crucial we assert control over how our land is used, ensuring that development is balanced with our community's needs and values. We should advocate for zoning laws that protect the interests of our county residents, ensuring that companies seeking to develop here must adhere to stringent environmental and community impact assessments.

We must insist on transparency in planning processes, providing a platform for local voices in decision-making. Our county officials must prioritize sustainability and the preservation of our agricultural heritage over opportunistic industrial encroachment.
