The Issue

I’m a lifelong resident of Tennessee, and I’ve always cherished the abundant natural beauty and rich wildlife our state has to offer. Like many Tennesseans, I’ve grown up enjoying outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing, finding solace and connection with nature. But recently, I feel as though the cost of enjoying these cherished pastimes is slipping out of reach.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has proposed yet another increase in hunting and fishing license fees, pushing our costs higher than those of any neighboring states. For many Tennesseans, this could mean making difficult choices between putting food on the table and participating in activities that are not just hobbies, but a way of life.

According to recent data, Tennessee's license fees are already higher than those in surrounding states like Kentucky and Alabama. These rising costs disproportionately impact low-income families, potentially deterring future generations from exploring nature and valuing conservation efforts.

We understand the need for the TWRA to fund wildlife conservation efforts and ensure sustainable practices are in place. However, continually raising license fees is not the solution. Instead, we propose exploring other revenue channels, such as promoting tourism, hosting wildlife events, or seeking federal grants dedicated to conservation and resource management.

Our goal is to strike a balance where conservation is funded without excluding ordinary citizens from the natural heritage they hold dear. Maintaining affordable access to hunting and fishing licenses ensures that more people can enjoy Tennessee’s beautiful outdoors, fostering a broader appreciation for wildlife and environmental stewardship.

Please join me in urging the TWRA to explore alternative funding avenues for wildlife conservation and halt further increases in license fees. Our voices matter, and it’s time we stand up for maintaining affordable access for all Tennesseans who love and respect our great outdoors.
