Stop inappropriate ads on children's apps
The Issue
My brother, who is just 10 years old and has autism, often uses children's apps on various platforms, all supposedly safe children's games. These platforms are supposed to be safe spaces for kids, but instead, they bombard him with inappropriate advertisements that no child should see. I am deeply concerned that he might inadvertently come across content that can have detrimental effects on his development and mental health.
There is substantial evidence that reveals the harmful effects of children being exposed to explicit or pornographic content. Experts have compared this exposure to experiencing traumatic events, which can significantly impact a child's brain and emotional well-being. This is particularly concerning for children with special needs, like my brother, who may process and respond to trauma differently.
The government has taken significant measures to control access to explicit content online, including requiring age verification for sites that host such material. It feels hypocritical that while strict regulations are in place for adult content websites, and social media, advertisements featuring similar inappropriate content are not subjected to the same scrutiny. Children’s apps are rife with these adverts due to lax regulations on third-party advertisement providers, and people in general are subject to inappropriate content in general whilst scrolling through unrelated content.
The main culprit is the rise of AI generated video content, AI generated book apps, and AI generated chat bots.
It's imperative that these ads undergo thorough moderation on children-centric platforms. This is a call for stricter regulation and accountability from advertising companies as well as the platforms that host them. Companies like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok must implement better controls to ensure such content never reaches the eyes of children. What is the use of age verification, when these advertisements are uncontrolled and are able to bypass them anyway?
By signing this petition, you are supporting a safer digital environment for all children, ensuring that they can learn, play, and interact without the fear of encountering harmful and inappropriate content. Urge regulators and tech giants to implement comprehensive measures safeguarding our children from these threats. Let's protect our kids...because their online world should be every bit as safe as their offline one.
