Stop illegal immigrants who cannot read English from driving on our highways
The Issue
The Petition Statement:
"We, the residents of New Jersey, demand immediate executive action from Governor Sherrill to protect our families on the road from the rising threat of fraudulent, unsafe, and non-English proficient commercial truck drivers.
The U.S. Department of Transportation recently linked hundreds of highway deaths to fraudulent commercial driver's license (CDL) practices, leading to a massive federal shutdown of corrupt training schools nationwide—including facilities operating right here in New Jersey. Despite these public safety threats, New Jersey lawmakers are actively considering Bill S1873, which would drastically expand the use of private, third-party companies to test commercial truck drivers and strip the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) of its power to limit these vendors.
As drivers who share the roads and highways everyday with these massive vehicles, we refuse to let corporate profits compromise highway safety. A driver moving at highway speeds cannot safely operate an 80,000-pound vehicle if they cannot read emergency road signs, construction warnings, or converse with state troopers.
We call on Governor Sherrill to:
Veto Bill S1873 or any legislation that loosens state oversight on third-party commercial driving schools.
Order an Immediate Audit of all existing private CDL training and testing facilities currently operating within New Jersey.
Mandate Strict English-Language Screenings conducted directly by state MVC employees before any commercial license is finalized, strictly enforcing federal safety standard 49 CFR § 391.11.
Our lives and the safety of our highways are not negotiable."
