Stop Illegal HMOs. Protect Tenants. Protect Communities

The Issue

I have personally witnessed several Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in my locality that are not registered. This worrying trend is becoming increasingly common as unscrupulous landlords exploit loopholes to convert properties into unauthorised HMOs, often by placing multiple tenants into inadequate housing conditions. This situation not only affects the quality of life for their tenants but also disrupts the community harmony and safety in our neighbourhoods.

Furthermore, landlords are frequently using rogue or bogus estate agents to evade responsibility, making it difficult for councils to hold them accountable. The current council interventions are hampered by lengthy processes and inadequate punitive measures that fail to deter these practices effectively.

Residents like ourselves, who have chosen these communities for their peaceful and friendly environments, are now becoming the victims of overcrowding and the associated negative impacts. We must stand together to demand changes.

We call on local councils and the UK government to take action by closing all illegal HMO conversions immediately. Here are the steps we believe need to be taken:

1. Introduce stricter regulations and ensure thorough checks before any HMO conversion is approved. Residents must have a say before an HMO is allowed in their neighbourhood to ensure it meets community standards and does not negatively impact the area.

2. Enable quicker enforcement actions against illegal HMO conversions, with swift penalties that dissuade such practices from continuing.

3. Re-examine and close the existing loopholes that allow landlords to divert responsibility to fraudulent estate agents and ensure that both parties are held accountable.

These changes are urgently needed to protect both the renters being exploited and the communities suffering the consequences of overcrowded and unregulated housing. It is time to take a stand for accountable and responsible housing practices and ensure a fair and safe living environment for everyone in the UK. Please sign this petition to show your support and to urge the quick adoption of these measures.
