Stop illegal fishing in the Royal Victoria Dock
The Issue
In the heart of London, at Royal Victoria Dock, I was documenting the serene life of Lady Swan, a graceful creature much loved by our community. Her presence was immortalized online, on platforms like Instagram, under the handle @swan.observer. Yet, this beautiful story took a tragic turn when Lady Swan died as a result of illegal fishing activities in the dock. This is not just a loss for me but for everyone who cherishes the natural beauty and biodiversity of our docks.
Our docks are meant to be a sanctuary for wildlife, clearly marked with signs prohibiting fishing to protect these habitats. Despite this, illegal fishing continues unabated, posing a significant threat to the swans, ducks, and other wildlife. We have signs all over this area, yet people still fish right next to them without any consequences, as it seems that local authorities are turning a blind eye.
Statistics show that illegal fishing is leading to a decline in bird populations. According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), urban bird populations are declining at a rate of 19% over the last decade due to such activities. Birds and other animals are an eco-balance in our urban landscape, essential for maintaining biodiversity - their loss affects the entire ecosystem.
Moreover, unauthorized fishing not only endangers wildlife but also disrupts the natural beauty that attracts both local families and tourists alike. The continued disregard for fishing restrictions erodes the community trust in local authorities and mars the reputation of this wonderful area.
We call on the Newham Council, along with local enforcement bodies, to take immediate and robust action to safeguard the Royal Victoria Dock. Measures must be implemented to prevent illegal fishing activities, such as increased patrolling and surveillance, higher fines for unauthorized fishing, and educational campaigns to inform the public about the detrimental impact of these actions.
