Every year, during the St. Mary of Carmen Society Annual Festival in Nonantum, our community faces the disruptive and often dangerous impact of illegal fireworks. While the festival is a cherished tradition that brings joy and togetherness, the unsanctioned use of fireworks causes numerous problems including significant prolonged distress and anxiety to neighbors with disabilities, families with young children and pets, and our veterans with PTSD.  Not to mention the risk of property damage, personal injury, and significant distress to wildlife.

It's vital to address these issues to ensure public safety and preserve the festival's positive atmosphere. Illegal fireworks are more than just a nuisance; they are a public safety hazard. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks account for an estimated 19,500 fires annually, causing property damage and risking lives. In addition, the noise from fireworks can be traumatic for children, veterans, and pets, with studies indicating a marked increase in anxiety levels and PTSD symptoms due to unexpected loud sounds, which are nonstop and random during the festival weekend. 

We urge the local authorities to take stronger measures to prevent the sale and use of illegal fireworks during the festival. This includes increased patrolling by law enforcement during peak times, setting up check points at common locations known for such activities, and imposing stricter penalties on those found in possession of illegal fireworks, as well as addressing specific complaints rather than looking the other way just because of the festival. 

Furthermore, we encourage the St. Mary of Carmen Society to engage with the community, educating festival-goers about the dangers of illegal fireworks and promoting safe alternatives, such as licensed fireworks displays or other noise-free celebratory options.

By taking these steps, we can protect our community and ensure that the St. Mary of Carmen Festival remains an event that everyone can enjoy safely.
